CRITERIA FOR THE MEMBERSHIP

1. Fellow member

2. Corporate Member

3. Associate Member

4. Graduate member

1.2 Qualifications required for corporate membership of the Institute:

The institute shall maintain a list of accredited urban design courses for the purpose evaluating the qualifications.

FELLOW MEMBER

Every candidate for transfer to the grade of Fellow should satisfy the Council that he/she;

i. has been a Member of the Sri Lanka Institute of Urban Designers for a continuous period of not less than ten years;

ii. has been engaged for a period of not less than ten years in the practice or teaching of the subject of Urban Design in a position of responsibility as a Corporate Member and has made a contribution to the profession acceptable to the Council,  adequate credit being given to professional consultancy experience gained after Corporate Membership and, to the knowledge & experience gained through urban design research carried out after Corporate Membership;

iii. has not been found guilty of reprimand or suspension by the Council within a period of ten years;

iv. At the time of applying for Fellow Membership, has actively participated in the institute activities and attended General Meetings.

Provided, however, that until the Institute of Urban Designers has been in existence for ten years, members who have been engaged for a period of not less than ten years after obtaining their qualification and experience as specified in 7.2.2 in the practice or teaching of the subject of Urban Design in a position of responsibility, have made a contribution acceptable to the Council, and also satisfy the criterion (iv) above, shall be eligible to apply for transfer to the grade of Fellow.

CORPORATE MEMBER

Every candidate for admission to the grade of Corporate Member should possess any one of the following:

(a). A Post-Graduate Degree of not less than One Full-time academic year or equivalent part-time duration in Urban Design, deemed equivalent to the Master of Urban Design of the University of Moratuwa, from a recognized university or equivalent institution,

and

not less than one year of practice or teaching of Urban Design after obtaining such qualifications,

and  

a pass at the Professional Practice Examination of the Sri Lanka Institute of Urban Designers.

(b). A first Degree of not less than four full-time academic years or equivalent part-time duration in Urban Design, from a recognized University or equivalent institution,

and

not less than two years of practice or teaching of Urban Design after obtaining such qualifications,   

and 

a pass at the Professional Practice Examination of the Sri Lanka Institute of Urban Designers.

(c). A Post Graduate Diploma in Urban Design from a recognize university or institute deemed equivalent to the Post Graduate Diploma of Urban Design of the University of Moratuwa,

and

not less than two years of practice or teaching of Urban Design after obtaining such qualifications

and

a pass at the Professional Practice Examination of the Sri Lanka Institute of Urban Designers.

(d). A first degree in a related academic discipline such as Architecture, Town & Country Planning, Landscape Architecture, etc, with the corporate membership of the relevant institute with a minimum of 10 years post charter working experience in handling with urban design projects or urban design teaching which is evaluated through a portfolio examination,

and

recommended by the Council of Institute of Urban Designers.

1.3 Qualifications required for non-corporate membership of the Institute:

HONORARY FELLOW

Honorary Fellows shall be elected by the Council in recognition of their contribution and distinguished accomplishments in the practice or teaching of Urban Design although they are not eligible for corporate membership of the Institute, provided, however, that the Council shall not admit more than one Honorary Fellow in each year and that the total number of Honorary Fellows shall not exceed five at any time.

HONORARY MEMBER

Honorary member from an allied profession or academia could be invited at the discretion of the council for a specific purpose and for a specific period. Such member will not have any voting rights or privileges of an elected council member.

ASSOCIATE MEMBER

Candidate for admission to the grade of Associate should possess:

A Post-Graduate Degree of not less than One full-time academic year with a research component or equivalent part-time duration in Urban Design with a research component, equivalent to the Master’s Degree in Urban Design of the University of Moratuwa, from a recognized University or equivalent institution,

or

a first Degree of not less than four full-time academic years or equivalent part-time duration in Urban Design from a recognized University or equivalent institution.

GRADUATE MEMBER

Candidate for admission to the grade of student should be following a Post-Graduate Degree course in Urban Design.

STUDENT MEMBER

Candidate for admission to the grade of student should be a first Degree course in Urban Design or allied profession. Student membership will laps.
